COMPUTER MEMORY
Memory is an essential element of a computer. Without its memory, a computer is of hardly any use. Memory plays an important role in saving and retrieving data. The performance of the computer system depends upon the size of the memory.
Memory is of following types:
1. Primary Memory/Volatile Memory.
2. Secondary Memory / Non Volatile Memory.
Primary Memory
- Primary memory remains directly connected with CPU.
- It is a volatile memory.
- Primary memory is a temporary memory.
- Primary memory is directly controlled by microprocessor.
- It keeps data and instructions temporarily only at execution time.
- Primary memory is faster than secondary memory.
- Its manufacturer cost is very high.
Secondary Memory
- Secondary memory doesn't remain directly connected with CPU.
- It is non-volatile memory.
- Secondary memory is a non-volatile memory.
- Secondary memory is controlled by users.
- Tt keeps data for any specific long time according to users.
- Secondary memory is slower than primary memory.
- Its manutacturer cost is lower than primary memory.
Primary memory
- The memory devices used for primary memory are semiconductor memories
- The primary memory is categorized as volatile and non volatile memories, RAM is the volatile memory and ROM is the non volatle memory
- Primary memory is known as main memory
- These memories are also called as internal memory.
Secondary memory
- The secondary memory devices are magnetic and optical memories.
- The secondary memory is atways non-volatile
- Secondary memory is known as additional memory or back memory
- These memories are also called as extemal memory
